UASA welcomes Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi’s decision to allow workers who do not qualify for UIF claims to apply for the Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (Ters) benefit.

We are equally pleased to see that workers who do qualify for UIF benefits can now apply themselves instead of via their employers.

The Ters benefit provides for a minimum payment of R3 500 and a maximum of R6 700 per month and will go a long way to assist workers who have lost their source of income since the inception of Covid-19 national lockdown.

The new rule will restore the dignity of taxpayers who have been without income for two months and are desperate to put food on the table during these challenging times.

UASA understands the frustration of workers who do not have union representation and commends the government for assisting all affected workers.

UASA urges all temporary laid-off workers to remain strong during this period and continue to help curb the spread of Covid-19 as we look forward to the start of level-3 lockdown and the resuming of most economic activities.
