|UASA joins strike in coal sector|
Gold sector to follow soon
UASA members at four coal mines – Goedehoop, Klein Koppie, New Denmark and Isobonelo Collieries – have voted to join the current strike in the coal mining sector as from yesterday (24 July), with the National Union of Mineworkers, with the rest of Anglo Thermo Coal joining the strike as from today.
There is a strong indication from several Xstrata mines that they will join the strike on Thursday if salary demands are not met.
UASA is negotiating for a salary increase of 14%, as did the National Union of Mineworkers, while Solidarity tabled a demand of 12%.
The union will know by 22:00 today (25 July) whether members in the gold mining sector will also down tools. If demands are not met by tonight strike certificates will be prepared for individual mandates from the mines. The mines affected are Anglo Gold Ashanti, Harmony Gold Mines, Rand Uranium and Goldfields Mines.
Uasa’s wage demands in the gold sector are also at 14%.
Additional demands concern medical contributions of 60% (employers) - 40% (employees) in the coal sector and 50%-50% in the gold sector, as well as demands regarding stand-by and call-out for officials and service increments.
